About ALLA (Australian Law Librarians' Association)

Established in 1969, the Association has grown from an informal group of six interested law librarians to a national association with over 700 members in all states and territories. ALLA represents librarians and information professionals working in courts, universities, government departments, law firms and professional associations.

In September 2006 members voted on a special resolution to change the name of the then Australian Law Librarians' Group (ALLG) to the Australian Law Librarians' Association (ALLA) - this became official on October 26th, 2006.

We are an incorporated national association with Divisions in Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia.

The Association aims to promote and provide a national focus for law librarianship and to support the interests of law libraries, collections and legal information services to both legal and public communities.

Aims and Objectives

The primary objectives of ALLA are:

  • To provide state and national network for law librarians in Australia
  • To provide a national focus for law librarianship and legal and business information
  • To act as a lobby group to promote the interests of law libraries, law collections and legal information services in the wider community
  • To benefit members and enhance the status of the profession by the further education and training of law librarians, legal information officers and others
