The information future: a perspective from the Parliamentary Library Senators and Members have a complex and pressured information environment - how does the Parliamentary Library site in it and what value do we add? The presentation will report on a recent evaluation (including survey and focus groups) of the Parliamentary information environment, where the Library is positioned compared to other information sources and key directions for the future. It will also canvass issues in providing parliamentary information to Australians and the role of libraries in supporting our democracy.

The Effects of Cross-Pollination : How Non-Library Mass Market Services Are Changing Library User Expectations and Behaviours In this talk we will consider how the emergence of free online services are affecting, and will continue to influence library user expectations and behaviours, posing new challenges for service delivery and information needs fulfillment in traditional libraries. Specific examples will be drawn from mass digitization, user generated content, end user composable services, and social tagging / recommender systems. In particular, the rise of these services reinforce, rather than challenge the need for long cultivated library and information science skills, but motivate revitalised service delivery models.

Carmel O'Sullivan has law, librarianship and training qualifications, coupled with experience in teaching and training roles in law firms and universities. This session will reflect back on basics, and discuss both the rules of adult learning theories and information literacy principles, and how and when to break them.

  • Piloted in 2005-06 by the Sterling Group (a network of law firm libraries in Sydney CBD,LILLi is now open to all NSW law libraries
  • the story behind LILLi, how it was implemented and what the future holds.
The presentation will also outline the features of the system and include a short demonstration.
