Weather, Transport and Other Services

Weather and What to Wear

In Spring, the weather in Canberra can be quite variable, with an average daytime temperature range from 7-23 degrees Celsius. It can also be wet and windy at this time of year. Nights can still be quite cold (sub-zero temperatures are not unheard of), so it's a good idea to pack layers and bring a coat.

Transport

Buses: Public transport in Canberra is limited to the Action bus services. Evening and night services are quite limited so taxis are the best option. Details of routes and timetables for buses can be found on the Action website at http://www.action.act.gov.au.

Airport shuttle bus: The Airliner shuttle bus service operates Monday to Friday and provides express bus service to and from the Airport and Canberra city, dropping passengers at selected hotels. You can pick up the Airliner bus from the central terminal right outside the main doors. Look for the shuttle bus stop as you leave the central terminal. The fare is only $5 one way and buses depart hourly for the city. More details of this service can be found at http://www.canberraairport.com.au/getting_here/shuttle.html

Taxis: Canberra Cabs are the local taxi service. Taxis can be ordered by calling 13 22 27. For further information visit their website http://www.cancabs.com.au. A taxi from the city to the airport will cost $15-20.

Hire cars There are several hire car companies in Canberra. Information on these can be found at http://www.canberraairport.com.au/getting_here/hire.html

Other Services

The ANU Union provides services to students, staff and visitors to The Australian National University. Its facilities include a shop, newsagent and post office, hairdresser, dentist and eateries.

Banks: Branches of all major banks are located in the Canberra City centre. Branches of the Commonwealth and National Australia Banks and Service One Credit Union are also located in the University Union on the ANU campus.

Internet: For details of available Internet services, see the Internet page.

Medical Services and Hospitals: There are a number of medical practices located in the city. After hours medical services are available through the Canberra Area Locums Medical Service (CALMS), which can be contacted on (02) 6288 1711. An after hours chemist is located adjacent to the city at O'Connor Shops (Sargood St, O'Connor). In the event of an emergency, Canberra and Calvary Hospitals have 24 hour emergency departments.

Restaurants: There are an enormous variety of restaurants, cafes and bars located in the city centre, catering to all tastes and budgets. For more information, see CitySearch Food and Wine
