ALLA 2008: The Art of Information
Satellite Events & Tours
The Satellite Events Committee is planning a number of events to encourage conference attendees to see as much of our great state as possible, both professionally and socially.
The tour will look at libraries in the Perth CBD and a trip to Kings Park in the morning, and an afternoon visit to some of the libraries in the Fremantle area, with time to explore our beautiful port city.
The committee will also provide a number of links to things to see and do in Perth - to encourage attendees to stay over the weekend and really explore our city. Even locals may find exciting things to do and places to see - so keep an eye out for this section!
We also have an online blog - so why not check it out. There is a link to a short film about Perth - so check it out and make your own suggestions - locals why not suggest places of interest and visitors why not let us know where you would like to go! Find it here - http://satellite08.blogspot.com/
* Sessions marked with * will run if sufficient people register - see session details for more information.

THE Tour!
It's not simply a tour it's THE tour! --- Kings Park, a wine cruise, and maritime museum featuring Australia II
The Satellite Events and Tours Committee is proud to announce a full day of satellite activities on Wednesday, 17 September that will highlight some of Perth's most famous sights, and squeeze in some educational information at the same time. If you haven't been to Perth before this is the perfect introduction!
Itinerary
10.00am - The tour will kick off at 10am at the Supreme Court of Western Australia. Attendees will meet at the Court, located in the CBD. (More details will follow on directions and transport options, however the location is within walking distance from hotels within the CBD.) We will split into small groups for a guided tour of the library, followed by morning tea. The Francis Burt Law Museum is also located near the Court, and we are hoping to have the opportunity to look at this museum which is the oldest public building in Perth, constructed in 1836.
11.00am - We will board a bus, equipped with video commentary, which will take us to Kings Park. We will be provided with a guided tour by our bus driver as we take a ride around beautiful Kings Park, seeing landmarks such as the State War Memorial and lookout points.
12 noon - We will arrive at Zamia Cafe which is located in Kings Park. Zamia Cafe is an energy-efficient cafe utilising the latest building techniques to conserve energy and minimise greenhouse emissions. Attendees will be asked to pre-order lunch from a menu that will be provided prior to the tour. Please note that lunch is not included in the price of a ticket – attendees are asked to pay for their own lunch and drinks.
1.30pm - Back on the bus and off to the picturesque port city of Fremantle.
2.00pm - Arrive at the new Fremantle Maritime Museum, where our guided tour will include submarines and Australia II. The museum holds many artifacts with great significance to Australian and Western Australian maritime history, and the beautiful new building overlooks Fremantle Harbour.
3.10pm - Back on the bus, heading towards the Fremantle passenger terminal.
3.30pm - River cruise departs. The cruise will take attendees from Fremantle to the Barrack Street Jetty in Perth. We will pass a number of beautiful natural landmarks, and the commentary will ensure that visitors finish the day with a wealth of information, and beautiful snapshots if they choose to bring their cameras. Tea and coffee will be provided, and there will be a wine tasting of a variety of local, award-winning wines (included in the price of the tour). The Swan Bells Belltower is located at the Barrack Street Jetty. Unfortunately it will be closed at this time, but even from the outside this structure is a sight to behold.
4.45pm – Disembark from the cruise and the tour is complete. The jetty is located in the Perth CBD, and is close to the new Esplanade train station and a short walk to the Busport. For those attendees who would like to go directly to the Conference Welcome Reception, transport options will be provided. However, there will be plenty of time for attendees to return to their hotels before the Welcome Reception if they so wish.
