  • Thursday 12 Feb 2009 Ted Glasson Award

Terri Maher

I am pleased to announce that Terri Maher from the Vanuatu Parliament Library is the recipient of the 2008 Ted Glasson Award. The Award is made for the best feature length article published in the Australian Law Librarian for the previous year.

Terri has worked for over two years with two different Australian volunteer programs in Vanuatu. Her article "Coconuts and Parchment: the Challenges of Culture and Information Management in Vanuatu", published in the Australian Law Librarian, Vol 16 No 3, not only recounts her personal experience in working in Vanuatu but also considers how the rather narrow workforce-based focus of most writings on information management fails to address wider cultural values of particular societies.

Terri's article describes the traditional information flows in Vanuatu and how several Parliament Library projects are attempting to combine these with Western technology to provide more effective delivery of information services across the different social spectra in the Republic of Vanuatu.

Congratulations to Terri as there were many excellent articles considered, making it a hard task for the Committee to choose a winner.

  • Monday 16 February 2009 ALLA Donation to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal

The ALLA National Executive would like to inform members that ALLA will be donating $1000 of national funds in the name of our association to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal. The Victorian Committee has also donated $1000 and the Tasmanian Committee has donated money to the Victorian Wildlife Rescue.

We hope that our modest contribution along with the large amounts that the appeal has already raised will go some away to assisting individuals and communities affected by these devastating bushfires.

We sincerely hope that no ALLA members or their friends and families have personally been affected and that everyone is safe and well.

    Regards,

    John Botherway
    National President
    Australian Law Librarians' Association

  • Friday 13 February 2009 Message from Jackie Fishleigh, President of BIALL

    Dear John
Like everyone else we were appalled to hear about the nightmarish fires in Australia.
The speed and loss of life were quite unprecedented. We sincerely hope that none of you have lost family members.
While we appreciate this message will not change anything we just wanted you all to know that our thoughts are with you at this tragic time.

    Jackie Fishleigh
    President of BIALL

  • 19 December 2008 ALLA Restructure Discussion Paper Update
(email from John Botherway to all ALLA members)

    Dear ALLA Members,

The response to the recent discussion paper indicated that there was general in-principle support to move forward subject to further investigation and clarification over various aspects of the proposal.

At this week's Teleconference of the National Executive (which includes all State Presidents/Convenors) it was agreed that the Sub-committee would undertake to provide as many answers and as much detail as
possible to questions and concerns raised by the end of June 2009.

We would then report back to the wider membership and endeavour to set up a debate on the issue via the list and at the Darwin Conference before seeking a mandate to proceed with getting state representatives on board to establish a concrete model.

Any model that comes out of this process will then need to voted upon at the various State and National AGMs so realistically we are looking at September 2010 before any final decision is made.

Thank you to all members who have attended the various state organised meetings to discuss this proposal and/or provided input via their State committees on this important issue.

Wishing you all a happy and safe festive season and wonderful 2009.

    Regards,

    John
