2009 ALLA Evolution Conference
Wednesday 2 – Friday 4 September 2009 Darwin Convention Centre
The 2009 ALLA Evolution Conference is being organised this year jointly by the Northern Territory and South Australian divisions and will be held at the brand new Darwin Convention Centre from 2 to 4 September 2009.
The Conference Committee invite you to be part of this unique experience as we celebrate:
- the 40th anniversary of ALLA (formerly known as the ALLG);
- the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin (born in February 1809);
- the 150th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s publication of ‘On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life (commonly known as ‘the origin of the species’) published in 1859.
The Theme
The theme of the conference is ‘evolution’. The committee is working hard to put together a program that includes topical areas such as those below but not limited to:
- Changing roles and directions in the law library professions
- Topical trends in legal practice
- Technology
- Publishing
- Cataloguing (theory)
The Venue
The Darwin Convention Centre (DCC) was opened in June 2008 and looks towards the city of Darwin from the edge of the Arafura Sea. It is sure to become a popular landmark of this beautiful tropical harbour city. With its waterfront setting and modern facilities the DCC is a high quality venue that will help to provide a unique conference experience. www.darwinconvention.com.au
Name our Monkey Competition - winner announced 23 February 2009
It is with great pleasure that I announce the winner of the Name the Monkey competition to name the mascot in the 2009 ALLA Evolution Conference logo.
We received many entries and thank you to those who entered.
After much deliberation the committee has chosen Scopes which was suggested by a couple of people; however it was first suggested by Hayley Leaver at University of South Australia Law Library and the committee has decided to award the prize to her.
John Scopes went on trial for teaching evolution to students, based on ideas developed by Charles Darwin, in preference to the Biblical version of events. The trial is commonly referred to as the ‘Scopes Monkey Trial’ or ‘The Monkey Trial’ - See State v. Scopes,Scopes v. State, 152 Tenn. 424, 278 S.W. 57 (Tenn. 1926.
Congratulations Hayley.
The Conference logo has been designed by Christy Martin of Arakasi Studio - 0402032903;
