Finding the Law - Two day workshops
Finding the Law is a course designed to introduce Victorian and Commonwealth case law & legislation resources and research methods to those new to law librarianship
The course is run over two days and consists of two workshops, one covering legislation and one covering case law. Each workshop consists of a trainer-led presentation, followed by hands on research skills exercises. Participants will also have full access to the online training product Finding the Law Online (FLO).
Case Law Workshop
Instructor: Trung Quach
Learning outcomes:
- Understand the court structure in the Commonwealth and Victorian jurisdictions
- Understand the difference between reported (including authorised) and unreported cases
- Construct a case citation
- Know what subscription and free resources can be used to find cases and commentary on them
- Find cases by party names, citation or subject; and find judicial consideration of a case
Legislation Workshop
Instructor: Naish Peterson
- Understand how Acts and Statutory Rules / Legislative Instruments are made and repealed
- Understand the difference between sessional legislation and compilations
- Construct a citation for a Bill, Act or subordinate legislation
- Locate Bills and related Parliamentary documents such as Explanatory Memoranda
- Find legislation by citation or subject
- Identify assent and commencement dates
- Find historical versions of legislation
- Know where to find commentary on an Act and how to find judicial consideration of legislation
