Finding the Law
The course is run as two stand alone full day workshops. Each workshop consists of a trainer-led presentation, followed by hands on research skills exercises. Participants will also have full access to the online training product Finding the Law Online (FLO).
Workshop 1: Case Law

Learning outcomes:
- Understand the court structure in the Commonwealth and Victorian jurisdictions
- Understand the difference between reported (including authorised) and unreported cases
- Construct a case citation
- Know what subscription and free resources can be used to find cases and commentary on them
- Using free resources, find cases by party names, citation or subject; and find judicial consideration of a case
Workshop 2: Legislation
Date: Thurs, 2 Feb 2017
Time: 10:00am-4:00pm

Instructor: Vanya Taylor
- Understand how Acts and Statutory Rules / Legislative Instruments are made and repealed
- Understand the difference between sessional legislation and compilations
- Construct a citation for a Bill, Act or subordinate legislation
- Locate Bills and related Parliamentary documents such as Explanatory Memoranda
- Find legislation by citation or subject
- Identify assent and commencement dates
- Find historical versions of legislation
- Know where to find commentary on an Act and how to find judicial consideration of legislation
Cost: $200 per session for ALLA (Vic) members
$240 per session for non-members
