The course is run as two stand alone full day workshops. Each workshop consists of a trainer-led presentation, followed by hands on research skills exercises. Participants will also have full access to the online training product Finding the Law Online (FLO).

Workshop 1: Case Law

Learning outcomes:

• Understand the court structure in the Commonwealth and Victorian jurisdictions
• Understand the difference between reported (including authorised) and unreported cases
• Construct a case citation
• Know what subscription and free resources can be used to find cases and commentary on them
• Using free resources, find cases by party names, citation or subject; and find judicial consideration of a case

Workshop 2: Legislation

• Understand how Acts and Statutory Rules / Legislative Instruments are made and repealed
• Understand the difference between sessional legislation and compilations
• Construct a citation for a Bill, Act or subordinate legislation
• Locate Bills and related Parliamentary documents such as Explanatory Memoranda
• Find legislation by citation or subject
• Identify assent and commencement dates
• Find historical versions of legislation
• Know where to find commentary on an Act and how to find judicial consideration of legislation
